CNR – Istituto Officina dei Materiali – IOM

Istituto Officina dei Materiali (IOM) – Materials Foundry is an interdisciplinary research institute of Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) with a focus on condensed matter physics, nanoscience and biophysics.

CNR – IOM’s mission is two – fold: to perform cutting – edge research at the nano and micro scale crucial for the development of new technologies and to develop advanced methods for the synthesis, characterization and modelling for new materials and biosystems.

The Institute operates laboratories and infrastructures which cover all activities ranging from idea – material – device, integrating theory, simulation, materials synthesis, advanced characterization and nanofabrication.

The main research themes and activites are: management of nanoscience research infrastructures; materials for energy storage and trasnsformation; quantum technologies; sensors and devices; health and nanomedicine.

Most IOM laboratories and infrastructures are open to the national and international scientific community, with access via dedicated user portals.

Infrastructures and technologies

CNR-IOM manages strategic infrastructures available to the national and international scientific community for studies on advanced materials, nanostructures, biosystems, sensors and devices. Our laboratories include:

  • Large-Scale Facilities – synchrotrons in Trieste (Elettra) and Grenoble (ESRF), free electron lasers (FERMI@Elettra) and neutron sources (ILL);
  • Laboratories for sample deposition and device fabrication at the nanoscale;
  • Laboratories for advanced characterization of materials and biostructures with imaging and spectroscopy techniques;
  • High performance computing and models.
International collaborations

CNR – IOM coordinates and participates in 9 EU funded projects and 6 bilateral one with extra EU partners. We have a long standing collaboration with ICTP supporting young scientists from developing countries. CNR – IOM manages 2 instruments at the European Photon and Neutron Science Campus in Grenoble; one is on the ESRF synchrotron and the other on the ILL neutron source.

NFFA-Europe (www.nffa.eu) is a research infrastructure based on open access for experimental and computational nanoscience which coordinates laboratories all over Europe. Currently there are 31 participating laboratories in 17 countries.

Overall, more than 300 scientists from 19 countries perform experiments using CNR – IOM facilities.
