Tartini Conservatory

The Tartini Conservatory, an Institution of Higher Music Education, has been active in Trieste for more than 120 years.

Founded in 1903, the Conservatory is housed in the prestigious Rittmeyer Palace located in the center of the city and is a strongly felt, recognized and perfectly integrated cultural institution in the artistic, cultural, scientific fabric of the city and the entire regional territory. The city of Trieste, of Central European tradition, devoted to inclusion and internationalization sees in the Tartini Conservatory an exemplary representative. The presence to date of 645 students of whom more than 200 come from all over the world (33 countries represented) makes the institution one of the most inclusive and international realities of the territory and among Italian Afam institutions. The institution is very attentive, with specific didactic and production projects, to activity in the territory as well as to internationalization and to the third level.

Tartini offers Academic Courses divided into three years courses (Bachelor Level) and two years courses (Master Level). With the reception also by the Serbian Ministry of the authorization for the activation of a joint degree of Guitar Master Level (Bachelor Level EQF7) between Trieste and the Academy of Music in Novi Sad -Serbia in a.y. 22/23 started the aforementioned joint degree between the two institutions.

The Conservatory also activated in a.y.2022/23 the biennial MASTER’S COURSE OF LEVEL II. IN PIANO (EQF8) by bringing the third level of studies for the first time to Tartini, and in a.y.2024/25 it obtained an accreditation from the Ministry for a PhD in collaboration with the Conservatories of Ferrara, Pescara and Udine, activating a PhD in MUSICAL COMPOSITION AND PERFORMANCE.

The Conservatory of Trieste, which collaborates with numerous organizations and associations in the area with which it organizes competitions and musical events, usually produces about 200 public musical events each year in Trieste and the region and regularly hosts Italian and foreign professors for seminars and master classes.

Within the Conservatory operates the “Bruno and Michèle Polli” Center for Tartini Documentation and Studies in which research on Giuseppe Tartini, conducted also within Interreg projects, is concentrated. The Conservatory maintains the web page www.discovertartini.eu

As a member of the “Association Européenne des Conservatoires,” the Tartini cooperates internationally with about one hundred European universities and academic institutions, promoting an extensive international mobility plan for its students and faculty each year, which places it at the top in Italy for number of exchanges.

Research results

Included in the regional university and research system by means of Regional Law 2/2011, the Tartini is part of the Memorandum of Understanding ‘Trieste city of knowledge’ for which a new (five-year) Protocol was signed on 16 June 2022 in which the universities, research and higher education institutions in the area contribute to making the Trieste district one of the most research-intensive areas in Europe.

The Tartini is also part of the SiS FVG –  Scientific and Innovation System engaged in Research, Development and Innovation in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the Ministry of Universities and Research, for the enhancement of the regional Science and Innovation System.

The largest music library in the region is open to the public at the Tartini. Equipped with more than 36,000 volumes, it also makes it possible to consult the most important online repertoires and the main specialised music journals.

For years, the Trieste Conservatory has been using the LoLa system (Low Latency audio visual streaming system), realised in partnership with the Garr Consortium, for the capture, coding and real time network re-transmission of very high quality audio/video signals. The system is the first in the world to operate with high-definition audio/video performance and sub-perception latency for remote musical and theatrical performance applications (performers physically located in different places and virtually co-present).

Funding for ‘Projects of Significant National Interest’ has always been reserved for the university world, but for the first time, as of 2020 (D.D. 1628, 16 October 2020), AFAM institutions have also been admitted to the selection procedure, thus equating – de facto – our research activity with that of the university. In 2022 the Conservatory of Trieste was the first AFAM institution (together with the Conservatory of Rovigo, a partner in the project) to have obtained this recognition.

Facilities for foreign students and researchers

The staff of the International Office of the Conservatory of Trieste consists of two Erasmus coordinating teachers who are in charge of the Ka 131 (Europe) and Ka 171 (Non-Europe) projects, respectively, and two administrative contact persons dedicated to students and teachers. The Erasmus coordinators have the task of organising the mobility of students and teachers and of creating and developing contacts with foreign institutions.  In addition to the staff of the international office, there is also the Didactics Delegate, who has the task of examining the Learning Agreements (study plans) of both incoming and outgoing students. The effective collaboration between all those involved guarantees Tartini students the recognition of their study period abroad, in full compliance with the recommendations and principles of the Bologna Process. The Office takes care of the documents part (calls for applications and related selections, document compilation) and, more generally, follows the administrative-accounting part of the Erasmus+ project.

The administrative contact person provides grant applicants with information on the relevant aspects of the mobility, in order to guarantee quality international cooperation: specifically, he/she deals with the application documents for internal Conservatoire selections and applications for foreign institutions, the financial agreement, insurance (civil liability, accident, health), OLS, payment of the grant and its timing, and the final participant report. The staff guarantees constant support for lecturers and students during the mobility period, in case of need even beyond office hours. Students are supported both with individual meetings and in small groups before their departure, so that they can acquire knowledge about the destination country, the documents they will have to present on their return and, more generally, about the opportunities that the Conservatoire offers its outgoing students. Welcome Days are also organised throughout the year for foreign students arriving at the Tartini and several orienteering days are organised to guide students through the diverse Erasmus world.

As far as accommodation is concerned, we can count on several options: an agreement with ARDIS (the Regional Body for the Right to Study) guarantees a number of lodgings at the Student House of the local university; the network of the local ESN office; the Welcome Office FVG, a network jointly constituted by the academic and scientific institutions of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, whose task is to offer students and researchers useful services and information regarding their stay through its website and helpdesk.
